How to Request a Student Transfer

Announcement - The Special Student Transfer window open from Monday, April 13th at 9:00 AM through Wednesday, May 6th at 11:59 PM. Expand to learn more.

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will open the student transfer window from Monday, April 13th at 9:00 AM through Wednesday, May 6th at 11:59 PM. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Available Schools & Grade Levels

Weekly Updates: A list of eligible schools and grade-level seating availability will be updated every Monday from April 13, 2026, through Monday, May 4, 2026, on the department website.

Grade-Level Availability: Please note that seat availability is grade-specific. A school's appearance on the eligibility list does not guarantee an open seat in your child's particular grade.

Important: You must select the correct grade level for the 2026-2027 school year. Selecting an incorrect grade will result in an automatic, non-negotiable forfeiture of your transfer request.

Student Transfer Restrictions

Transfers are not available for the following:

  • Specialty programs/schools, lottery-based programs, or public charter schools.
  • Pre-Kindergarten programs (enrollment is based strictly on residency and income).
  • Newly constructed schools or schools temporarily relocated.

The Office of Student Records, Transfers, and Archival Services (OSRTAS) will not accept student transfer requests to schools that exceed state-rated capacity. Click here to view a list of schools eligible to receive transfer students. Seating capacity is based on a first come, first served basis.

Student Transfer Requests FAQs

What You Need to Know

  • Transfer Window: PGCPS accepts student transfer requests for the upcoming school year from April 13th through May 6th. Only one request may be submitted per student each year.
  • Confirmation: After successfully submitting your request, you will receive a confirmation number. Please keep this number, as it is required to track the status of your application.
  • Seating Availability: The electronic system will not process requests for schools or grade levels where all available seats have already been filled. If your first choice is unavailable, you must select another school with open seats.

Important Restrictions

  • Grade Level Accuracy: You must select the grade level your child will enter for SY2026-2027. Choosing the incorrect grade level will invalidate your request.
  • Ineligible Schools & Programs: Transfer requests are not accepted for:
    • Schools exceeding state-rated capacity.
    • Specialty schools (including lottery-based programs).
    • Public charter schools
    • Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) or Early Childhood Centers (ECC).
  • Transportation: Bus transportation is not provided for transfer students. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for providing daily transportation to and from the new school.

Submission Deadline Waiver

Transfer requests may be submitted outside of the transfer season only for the following reasons:

  • New Residents: Families moving into Prince George’s County after the transfer season ends (late summer) may still request a transfer. To begin, parents or legal guardians must submit both former and current proof of residency to verify "new residency status." Once confirmed, you may apply for schools with available seating in your student's grade level by emailing student.transfers@pgcps.org.
  • Health-Related Requests: For transfers based on health issues, a licensed health practitioner must complete the required form. A PGCPS health professional must verify all documentation.
  • Terminal Grade Students (Class of SY2026-2027): Students entering their final grade level for the 2026-2027 school year who move to a new neighborhood may request to stay at their current school through graduation. Students must meet promotion and residency requirements.
    • Note: This does not apply to schools affected by boundary changes.
  • Boundary Change Inquiries: Students in their terminal grade for SY2027 who are affected by boundary changes have been notified. More information is available at tinyurl.com/pgcps-Boundary.
