Student Transfer Requests Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a transfer request if my child is currently enrolled in a PGCPS school?

Student transfer request submissions are limited to parents/legal guardians with an active ParentVUE account (username and password) and to students with an identification number.

To access the Student Transfer System (STS), click the ParentVUE Login page link and click on “I am a parent” to begin the student transfer request process. Enter your username and password afterwards.  Locate the “Student Transfer System” tile from the ParentVue Portal Home Page.  Click on the “Student Transfer System” tile to access the Student Transfer Portal.  You may select the language of your choice from the portal’s homepage.  After reviewing the Welcome Page, click on “Go to Student Information” at the bottom to select the identification number for the student you wish to transfer and begin the submission process.

How to apply for a transfer if my child is NOT currently enrolled at a PGCPS school?

The Online Registration Guide provides step-by-step instructions for either creating a new ParentVue account or accessing an existing one. To create a ParentVUE account, click on ParentVUE for New Families and enter the required information. All information must match existing records.  The activation link will be emailed from synergy.feedback@pgcps.org within 24 hours. Once you receive the email, follow the instructions to activate your account.  Note: ParentVUE accounts are restricted to legal guardians.  Contact your current school of enrollment for additional support.

To request a student identification number: Log in to your ParentVUE account and complete the Student ID Number application.

Once you have received your child’s student ID number, you will email student.transfers@pgcps.org to request a transfer form. This process is only if your child has not been enrolled.

Can I submit a transfer request to any school?

Student Transfer Window:  April 13 – May 6, 2026

The transfer application link opens at 9:00 a.m. on April 13 and closes promptly at 11:59 p.m. on May 6. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Available Schools & Grade Levels

Weekly Updates: A list of eligible schools and grade-level seating availability will be updated every Monday from April 13, 2026, through Monday, May 4, 2026, on the department website.

Grade-Level Accuracy: Seats are limited. Although a school may be listed, it might not have space in your child’s specific grade.

Important: You must select the correct grade level for the 2026-2027 school year. Selecting an incorrect grade will result in an automatic, non-negotiable forfeiture of your transfer request.

Student Transfer Restrictions

Transfers are not available for the following: Specialty programs/schools, lottery-based programs, or public charter schools. Pre-Kindergarten programs (enrollment is based strictly on residency and income). Newly constructed schools or schools temporarily relocated.

When should my child stop attending their current school?

Important Enrollment Instructions

  • Wait to Withdraw: Do not withdraw from your current school before July 6, 2026.
  • Enroll via Synergy: Use the Online Registration (OLR) portal to enroll at the new school.
  • Required Document: Your OSTRAS Approval Letter must be uploaded during registration; without it, enrollment cannot be completed.
  • Submission of a request does not ensure a transfer will be granted.

What schools are eligible for transfers?

See the list of available schools. Student Transfer Requests will only be considered for schools with available seats at the school and/or grade level.

If my transfer request is approved, is there transportation for my child?

Transportation Responsibility

Parents or guardians assume full responsibility for transporting students to and from their approved transfer school. PGCPS transportation is NOT provided for transfer students. Please note that students may NOT utilize specialized busing designated for technical, vocational, career, special education, or other specialty programs.

How will I be notified?

Important Next Steps:

  • Confirmation Number: Once your request is submitted, please write down your 5-digit confirmation number for your records.
  • Verify Your Address: Check your address in Synergy to ensure it is up to date and accurate.
  • Notification: Decision letters will be mailed via the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) no later than June 19, 2026.  Submission of a request does not ensure a transfer will be granted.

Exception to the student transfer deadline

Transfer requests may be submitted outside of the transfer season only for the following reasons:

  • New Residents: Families moving into Prince George’s County after the transfer season ends (late summer) may still request a transfer. To begin, parents or legal guardians must submit both former and current proof of residency to verify "new residency status." Once confirmed, you may apply for schools with available seating in your student's grade level by emailing student.transfers@pgcps.org.
  • Health-Related Requests: For transfers based on health issues, a licensed health practitioner must complete the required form. A PGCPS health professional must verify all documentation.
  • Terminal Grade Students (Class of SY2026-SY2027): Students entering their final grade level for the SY2026-SY2027 school year who move to a new neighborhood may request to stay at their current school through graduation. Students must meet promotion and residency requirements.
    • Note: This does not apply to schools affected by boundary changes.
  • Boundary Change Inquiries: Students in their terminal grade for SY2027 who are affected by boundary changes have been notified. For questions, please email school.boundaries@pgcps.org.
