The new school year brought a fresh addition to PGCPS cafeterias: the Salad, Sandwich & Fruit Bar Initiative, giving students more opportunities to enjoy fresh food, variety and choice.

For Phase I of the initiative, students in 14 Innovation and Performance Area middle and high schools will have access to more fresh fruit and vegetable options at lunchtime, to build balanced meals that meet USDA school meal requirements.

Depending on the school and daily menu, students can select from an assortment of fresh vegetables, fruits and other meal components served in an inviting, abundant display designed to encourage students to explore nutritious foods.

Phase 1 schools include:

Middle Schools: Benjamin Stoddert, Drew-Freeman, Hyattsville, Oxon Hill, Thurgood Marshall and William Wirt

High Schools: Bladensburg, Bowie, Central, Crossland, Dr. Henry Wise, Laurel, Potomac and Eleanor Roosevelt

The initiative is part of Food & Nutrition Services’ broader culinary transformation strategy to make school meals fresher, more appealing and more responsive to student preferences. Student participation and feedback will help inform future expansion.
