Social Studies
Mission
The National Council for the Social Studies defines social studies as "the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." In Prince George's County, the Social Studies program strives to teach students how to develop an understanding and appreciation of the contributions that diverse civilizations and cultures have made throughout history and the impact they have had on the development of democratic ideals.
Within our program, students study both historic and contemporary geographic, social, political, and economic issues that shaped the world that our students live in today. Through quality curriculum and professional development, our program promotes the enhancement of the classroom experience with a wide variety of educational opportunities including field studies, community projects, speaker programs, and other student interactive projects for the Social Studies to come alive in the classroom.
