What to Do If a Loved One Is Detained or Arrested by Immigration

Maryland Pro Bono Resource Center
In partnership with MSBA

If someone is detained, having this information and documentation ready can help you respond quickly and effectively. ICE will move quickly to transfer your loved one out of Maryland and the United States, so the faster you act the better.

STEP 1: Gather Useful Information
1. Full Legal Name of the Detained Person
2. Date of Birth of the Detained Person
3. A Number of the Detained Person
(A Numbers typically show the letter A followed by 8 to 9 digits)
4. Country of Birth of the Detained Person
5. Date and the Location of their Arrest (only if you can find it)
6. Current Detention Facility (only if you can find it)
7. Immigration History or Court Details
8. Your Relationship to the Detained Person
9. Your Contact Information

STEP 2: Try to Locate Them
Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator:
https://locator.ice.gov/odls/#/search
Note: it won’t work for people under 18 years old. You may need to check on this periodically as it may take time to update.

STEP 3: Contact Legal Help
Nonprofits:
1. Amica Center for Immigrant Rights: https://amicacenter.org/get-help/
(202) 331-3329
2. CASA Maryland: https://wearecasa.org/maryland (866) 765-2272
3. Others are listed here: https://www.immigrationadvocates.org/legaldirectory/

Websites with lists of private attorneys:
American Immigration Lawyers Association https://ailalawyer.com/

Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project https://asaptogether.org/en/private-attorneys/

Please note: Nonprofit organizations are receiving a lot of requests for help right now, and we cannot guarantee they will be able to take the case. You may want to contact a private immigration attorney. Be careful, a notary public cannot represent your loved one or provide legal advice.
