On February 23, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) students and staff participated in virtual learning for the first time since the pandemic. The Board-approved virtual learning plan enabled continuity of instruction without adding a make-up day.
PGCPS is required to meet state instructional time requirements, and adjustments to this year’s school calendar are still necessary. At this time, all five built-in make-up days will be used, and one additional day – June 18 – has been added as described in the Inclement Weather Make-Up Plan section below.
We continue to explore the potential use of other days such as April 6, and any waivers granted by the state, including the waiver of the 180-day requirement. This calendar update reflects Board action and accounts for six of the eight make-up days. PGCPS will finalize the full recovery plan in the coming weeks.
January’s winter storm had a significant impact on our county roads, schools, and neighborhoods – resulting in a seven-day loss of instructional time. We had one additional closure due to inclement weather in December, so will need to make up eight school days.
To meet state requirements for instructional time, we are first adjusting this year's school calendar using all five of our built-in make-up days:
Although Presidents’ Day was considered as a potential make-up day, schools and offices will remained closed. Instead, the Board approved adding one additional make-up day to the end of the school year – June 18 – and we will ask the State for a waiver of the 180-day requirement for the remaining days when the window to request waivers opens at the end of winter. If the waiver isn’t granted, we are considering Monday, April 6 as one of the make-up days.
The Board officially approved a new Virtual Education Day Plan on February 5 that would allow us to shift to virtual learning in the event of another winter storm. The plan is now available on our website. Our goal is to keep our students learning while ensuring everyone stays safe during extreme weather.
While we navigate these changes, we may need to make additional updates to the school calendar. We truly appreciate your patience and flexibility throughout this process.
