Scholars Visit Bowie State University
Saturday, November 16, 2024, The Bowie State University Center for Research and Mentoring of Black Male Students and Teachers extended an invitation for ten black male students from William Wirt Middle school to attend a full day field trip to provide scholars an opportunity to examine possible S.T.E.A.M. majors and careers that they could pursue in college to become a teacher. The center at Bowie State University seeks to support a pipeline of Black males who want to enter the education profession, where Black males only represent 2 percent of teachers in U.S. public schools. During this field trip, students learned about Science,Technology, Engineering, Arts, Athletics, Agriculture, and mathematics to inspire curiosity and exploration in S.T.E.A.3 M. fields by building community and creating a space for students to connect with peers and mentors. Students toured the campus and visited various university buildings that housed the many programs offered by Bowie State. Mentors provided the scholars an opportunity to reflect on their character by focusing on their past, the present, their future, their gifts to the world and ways to support their communities.
