Skies Above Prince George's County

While we don’t have an in-person public program this month, we wanted you to keep your eyes on the skies as some amazing views of the planets and the Moon are happening at the start of 2025!

Mars is in opposition! Check out what that means with THIS brief video.

Mars is traveling retrograde! Follow its path from November of last year through March of this year with THIS short video.

On Monday, January 13, grab your binoculars or telescope to watch the Full Moon occult (cover) Mars! Follow the path in THIS video. Note that I didn’t have the times right for our area; Mars will actually first disappear from PG County skies about 9:16 PM and reappear at 10:30 PM. Keep in mind that the moon is so bright that Mars will be hard to see even before these times. So grab a pair of binoculars to fully appreciate this event! And hope for clear skies! ;)

These videos were recorded in our planetarium theater using sequences developed by E&S/COSM via the Digistar cloud. I love our new planetarium system!

For more detailed sky information for January, watch THIS 3.5 minute video from NASA.
