PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Montessori program provides a unique, well-rounded approach to education that supports every aspect of a child’s development—intellectual, emotional, social, and physical. The Montessori environment encourages dignity, respect, and a lifelong love of learning. Instruction is tailored to match each student’s interests and abilities, while lessons emphasize critical thinking and collaborative learning.

Montessori classrooms are grouped by age, allowing students to stay with the same teacher and peers for several years as they progress through multi-year learning cycles. Families who enroll in the Montessori program are expected to support their child’s development into an independent, confident, and self-directed learner, with the intention of completing the program through eighth grade.

  • Primary (Pre-K3 through Kindergarten) classrooms are for children ages three to six.
  • Lower elementary classrooms are for children ages six to nine.
  • Upper Elementary classrooms are for children ages nine to eleven.
  • Middle school students include ages eleven to fourteen years of age with diverse groupings based on student ability.

Program Features

Montessori offers students unique opportunities for:

  • Self-directed learning choices and personalized collaboration with teachers;
  • Purposeful repetition of concepts with increasing rigor, from primary throughout the elementary grades;
  • A prepared environment that provides a sense of freedom within classroom limits

Montessori school assignments are determined based on the student's home address, as defined by designated school boundaries. Assignments are not based on the location of before- or after-school care providers. For additional information and to apply, visit our website or call 301-808-8150.
